Cairn in the White Mts 1

Acrylic on canvas board

I painted this piece (and Cairn in the White Mts 2) as an homage to one of my favorite places to be: the mountains of New England. I’ve always been fascinated by the intricately balanced piles of rocks that hikers use as guideposts in the mountains, also known as “cairns.” These sturdy piles of rocks serve a practical purpose, yet they symbolize to me the strength and beauty of the mountains and the courage it requires to traverse the most difficult trails to reach the summit of each peak.
