Nature’s Design :: Olive Branch

January 12, 2015.

For this month’s installment of my Nature’s Design series, I bring you the humble olive branch. No, olive groves aren’t easily found in southeastern Pennsylvania, especially in the midst of a cold winter. But with the recent terrorist attacks in Paris weighing on my mind and heart, I felt compelled to respond with a drawing of the classic symbol of peace – the Olive Branch. After I completed the sketch (in pen & ink and colored pencil) I wanted to include a typographical message of world unity – and the hope for universal peace. Not every language and nationality is included here of course, but enough to get the point across, I think.  You’ll notice the largest word for peace is in French, “paix.” My heart and prayers go out to the families and victims of this senseless crime. I like to remember the wise words of Martin Luther King:

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
